Abney Hall school proposal withdrawn

The proposal to convert Abney Hall into an independent school has been withdrawn by the applicants.

As the site is privately owned by Bruntwood, and of course can continue to have offices there without any further permission required, it’s up to Bruntwood what they seek to do next.

Your local councillors – in Cheadle & Gatley and Cheadle Hulme North wards – will be seeking to get a positive outcome and to ensure that the house is preserved and the park remains open for public use as it is now.

Is it not possible that Stockport council could buy this property and open it up to tourism, with additional revenue as a wedding or party venue like Adlington Hall. At least that way you could guarentee public access to the park.

Hi Peter. I’d love to say that the Council could buy the site, but in the current economic climate I just don’t see where the money can come from. However, there is currently public access to the park and I don’t see that changing (to say the least, the local councillors would oppose any such change, and the park is council property so it couldn’t be easily forced on us).

Actually, Bruntwood only lease Abney Hall from the council, so its a relatively easy option to re-acquire it and develop is as a tourist attraction, like Bramhall Hall is now. The real rub I would suggest is whether there is any impetus from the council to actually do this. Let’s not forget though that it was due to a lot of work agitating against the planning application by local residents and the Friends of Abney that made this happen.
