I see from the Council that the Co-operative Store is applying for a license to sell alcohol from 30 High Street, Cheadle, SK8 1AL.
That’s the old Ethel Austin store between Boots and Costa, so I can only assume the Co-op are planning a convenience store at that location and are, sensibly, looking to get the right approvals in place before they commit.
Interesting. Anyone got any thoughts on that one?

I agree with David. Free parking for the first 20 minutes may stop the parking outside the banks etc in Cheadle. I have sometimes counted 7 and above cars ,obviously cannot be bothered to use the car parks like the rest of us. They contribute to the traffic jams going through Cheadle.

Hi David, Ann – yes, we do look at different options for parking and some initial free time is definitely possible.
There are a couple of issues, though. The first is the loss of revenue to the council – money that pays for parking enforcement. The second is whether people will use it. Are people parking on the roads to avoid paying, or for the convenience of being right next to the shop? Some of each, I’d guess, so I don’t know how far 20 mins free parking in the car parks would solve the problem.

The possibility of the Co-op coming to Cheadle is fantastic news as, like David, I applaud their ethical credentials (and their merchandise is good too). I’ve often envied Gatley having two and was hoping Co-op would be the new occupants of the former Somerfield store in Cheadle!
Like David and Ann I would endorse fears about illegal parking and any free parking help would be welcome. I share Iain’s misgivings about whether people would actually use parks.
Whilst on the subject I am getting increasingly annoyed by people using the Wilmslow Road bus-stop as a car park for shopping at Tesco’s; as someone who regularly drives down Chapel Street it is often very hard to see the traffic when trying to turn right on to Wilmslow Road because of incosiderate parking.
In short …. a very warm welcome to the Co-op …

I agree with the idea of either 20 minutes free parking ( if you just want to pop into the bank, 30p for 2 hours is stupid) or a tiered rate, say 1st 30mins 10p, 60 mins 20p etc. For people making use of the shops etc, 60 mins would be more than adequate for most.

Like the others; good news I think . The co-op is a more worthy addition to Cheadle than Tesco is ever likely to be. But on the subject of parking, c’mon guys its 30p!! I’ll wager if it were free, those people in the big SUVs will still park on the zig zags to go into Nat West (Twice this week). The real answer is to have a permanent parking attendant for Cheadle. That way the council’s revenue is protected and the traffic is kept flowing through Cheadle.

On the face of it good news that an organisation such as the COOP is interested – they have an excellent ethics policy.
My concerns are a Convenience Store=additional [mainly illegal] parking as motorists will be tempted to risk the chance of a fine [the risk being negligible] to nip in for and grab their bits & pieces.
The obvious places being the Bus Stop and the disabled bay [Costa Coffee may have something to say regarding this as many of their customers use this as supposed official parking].
Has anybody ever considered making the Car Parks FREE for the first 20mins [ticket needed] to encourage motorists to not park illegally?
