Progress on new stations for Cheadle and Gatley

Last year the Lib Dems ran a campaign in Cheadle for work to start to look at a new Cheadle station on the Stockport to Altrincham line.

We’ve recently had good news – Sir Howard Bernstein, who heads up AGMA – the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities – and will be heading up the new Manchester City Region – has said that not only a Cheadle station but also a new ‘Gatley North’ station on the Stockport-Altrincham line are to be looked at in more detail.

This is part of a scheme to greatly enhance public transport across Manchester.  As always, nothing’s going to happen overnight, but we do seem to be moving in the right direction.

I am realy pleased with this development, i have heard many times from people who have said a station in Cheadle is pointles and the money should be spent on improving Gatley. These remarks usualy come from a Gatley resident who doesn’t have a fifteen to twenty minute walk to the nearest station or have to sit on a slow bus that in the past has taken an hour or more to go seven miles into the centre of town. A simple plane similar to Gatley with metal platforms and bus stop style shelters would be enough. I would use this facility for sure if it was built.

I am also delighted. Like Gary I can use Gatley Station so have no axe to grind, but I feel very sorry for Cheadle residents who have to take the slow ‘bus route to Manchester It is time that some of Beeching’s decisions were reversed. He did us no favours.

After some soul searching, this is an immediate result from AGMA. Cheadle stands very poorly when compared to other parts of Stockport when it comes to transport, so I regard this as an overdue essential. But let’s not talk of compromise when it comes to station facilities. Let’s do it properly but perhaps the best facility might be the necessity to buy a ticket via turnstile access before you can get on the platform, so at least the vandals have to pay to do some damage!!!
By the way does any one know where a Cheadle station (and the “Gatley North”) might be located?

Still a long way to go – I don’t want to get too excited yet!

On location, I don’t know. I’d assume the starting point for Cheadle would be to look near the site of the old Cheadle station over the road from Cheadle Green.

In Gatley there doesn’t appear to be an obvious site we can say “it’s going to be there” – it looks to me like there are several possible locations, all with their pros and cons.

About time too! Cheadle has long lagged behind the rest of stockport with regard to public transport.

I would think that the site of the old Coal Yard stop, (just opposite the Ashlea Pub on Manchester Road) would be a front runner. It has a fair amount of space judging by the number of traveller caravans that park on it from time to time!

I read years ago that they were looking at Carrs Road near Roscoes Roundabout to put a station for Cheadle – this would be ideal – right in the middle and would also serve Cheadle Heath residents. I would certainly use it.
